Yes, she was an Ugly Rubber Duckling.
Norma was more than just any regular ugly duckling, she also had bright yellow skin that had a rubbery feel and when she quacked, the quack carried so far that ducks from neighboring lakes would fly off in a panic.
Sad for Norma, as she had to grow up all alone. At least for a while that is.
As it turns out, while Norma, the ugliest of ugly ducklings was shunned by her webbed footed friends in the lake, she was the most popular rubber duck with the people on the beach.
Whenever Norma swam near the shoreline people would gather and try to lure her closer by throwing her pieces of bread. Norma loved bread, especially the darker 'whole wheat' type.
Norma swam over to the girl in the water and noticed that she wasn't moving. There were others on the beach playing volleyball, but none of them seemed to notice Norma or the girl in the water. Something had to be done-- and fast-- she thought. But what could she do, she was just a rubber ducky?
Norma started quacking. She quacked as loud and as long as she could. QUAAAK QUAAACK QUACKKK!!!
Norma had the loudest quack you could imagine. Leaves fell off the trees when she quacked it was so loud.
Thankfully, the people on the beach heard the quack and saw Norma swimming in a circle around the red headed girl who was still floating face down in the water. The people ran to help the little girl.
Lucky for everyone that one of the people playing volleyball on the beach knew how to do CPR and another had a cell phone. They picked the girl up from the water and while one person tried to get her breathing again, another called for an ambulance.
In a short time the ambulance showed up and took the girl to the hospital.
Norma had done good.
Lucky for the girl, the ugliest of ugly ducklings was nearby and could let out that super loud quack to call attention to her plight.
Norma doesn't feel bad any more about being called the ugly rubber ducky because she knows that what the other rubber ducks think is ugly is actually a special gift from God that allowed her to save the life of the red haired girl.
You could say that what made Norma so ugly was that she was a Super-Ducky-Quacker as opposed to just a mediocre-ducky-quacker.
Many times ducks call 'ugly' the very features that make a ducky better than the rest.
Jealous duckies are all over, they love to call the better duckies 'ugly' so that they themselves feel better for being plain, mediocre ducks.
UPDATE:
While Norma was living a comfortable life as being the loud-quacking ugly duckling in the pond, she still hoped that someday her beak could be smaller like the other duckies.
Her prayers were answered in 2002 when a radical new surgical procedure was available.
Norma became the first ugly duckling to have her beak surgically reduced to near 'normal' size. Lucky for her, her loud QUAAAAACK is just as loud as ever. With the smaller beak she also floats better too.
Norma has now pursued a career in modeling and is the featured rubber duck on many of the web pages of the Rubber Duck Land rubber ducky website.
She plans to release a CD of Christmas Quacks in the near future, perhaps even her own movie.
